California City Studios Inc, a film studio facility in East Kern County has been attracting film
makers to this area of the Mojave desert for 8 years now. While developing the studio Russell
and Cail Michael the principles of California City Studios Inc have discovered the need for
tourism in the area and the potential visitors an amusement park would attract. There are
millions of travelers that pass by this small desert community in which the studio settled in,
then adopted there name, California City. Highway 14 and 58 freeway intersect at this
community making it a very desirable area for the amusement park. The world renowned
Mojave Air and Space Port is located just miles from the center of town and have been the
center of attention world wide as they lead us into commercial space travel, with the launching
of Space Ship One just a few years ago.
The closing of Star Trek the experience in Los Vegas has been a factor in the Movie studio
pushing forward with this theme park at this time, hoping to capitalize on the millions of
followers of that particular Los Vegas attraction. The studio hopes to offer something just as
good if not better here in the high desert of southern California where stars are one of the
lours to desert visitors and where commercial space travel is laying down it's roots.
Russell and Gail Michael from California City Studios plan to build Space Port One in the center
of California City as opposed to the studio property in order to take advantage of the many
shops and retail outlets already established in town. By building in town they eliminate the
need for a lot of retail space in side the amusement park and can concentrate more on
attractions, with in the park . Finding property in the City and developing it will not be a
problem several sites are already in consideration and things are moving forward.
There is another reason for building Space Port One in the hart of California City. By building it
in town they eliminate the traffic from around the studio. Placing it in town leaves the lucrative
film business already established at the studio in tack, with out all the disruption of the high
traffic count the Park is sure to bring. The studio will still be able to utilize the Space port park
for filming by closing it 3 day a week and making it available for filming on those days.
The Attractions and the sets needed for the park will in most part be built at the studio
Property, they can then be moved to the park at anytime, eliminating costly unnecessary
moves or down time associated with building other theme park attraction. By building the sets
and all the attraction at the studio, gives the studio the added advantage of trying them out on
the thousands of movie makers and their crew members that film at the studio each year. They
can also get feed back from the film makers on the sets, rides and other attractions they are
building. This also allows information to flow to film makers that a new and unusual set will be
available to utilize for filming. If we run into a problem building the park in town at least it will
be available for filming at the studio while we iron out any problems we my encounter in the
construction and permitting process.
The competition by other states for the film industry business is fierce and heating up daily as
other states adopted new tax credits to lure film makers to their state. These tax credits are
louring more and more film makers from California every year. California City Studios has been
battling that problem as well as other problems that daunt this high desert community and
make it undesirable for film makers . One such problem is a lot of the credits or incentives
offered by California means films have to be shot with in the long established 30 mile zone of
the center of Hollywood in order to get the incentives. The other problem in East Kern County
is available Motel space for film makers, the lack of a local grocery store and so on. The
creation of a tourist attraction is one way to eliminate most of these problems and also give film
makers something else to film and keep some of that lucrative film money in California.
